When hammock enthusiast Joe Demin visited a tiny island in southern Thailand on vacation, he discovered some of the most comfortable hammocks he'd experienced, captivated by the intricate weaving and beautiful colors. He was surprised to learn that the hammocks were created by artisans of the Mlabri Tribe, who, along with fellow hill-tribe groups in the rural Mae Lai Valley, have endured extreme poverty, field labor in harsh conditions, illegal slash-and-burn agriculture, malaria outbreaks, and malnourishment. Inspired, Joe founded Yellow Leaf Hammocks to join with the tribe in building a global brand and help bring them sustainable, long-term social and economic change.
